tv   KPIX 5 News at 6pm  CBS  April 15, 2013 6:00pm-7:01pm PDT

6:00 pm
for those of you just joining us this is a special expanded edition, part of our cbs news continuing coverage of the terrorist attack at the boston marathon. we have just learned moments ago that a third person has died. two bombs went off near the end of the race has runners were making their way to the finish line. what was to be a moment of triumph turned to a tragic, tragic event this evening. besides the three dead, more than 120 were hurt, some of them critically, at least one device did not explode and was recovered by police. but there is conflicting information about that tonight.
6:01 pm
the f.b.i. has taken the lead role in the investigation. there has been no climb of responsibility and there was no warning. president obama vowed to find and bring to justice whoever is responsible. jonathan elias of our cbs boston station wbz was there on boylston street when the bombs went off. jonathan? >> scott, i was 30 feet away from that initial blast and we were filming people coming across the finish line for what should have been an end of a jubilant race. i mean, they were ecstatic. people were raising their arms up in the air, my producer, my photographer, myself, we are high-fiving these guys and just cheering them on and then a second later the bomb went off. when that first bomb went off we held our ground not knowing what had just happened and then seconds later the second bomb went off and that's when we knew exactly what was going on. we ran toward the scene of the initial blast as everyone else was running away trying to get out and off of boylston street. police officers down the street were holding up their hands and
6:02 pm
stopping some 9,000 runners still on the track telling them the race was over, they can't come down boylston and the carnage that was left on the sidewalk is forever burned in my mind and the mind of everybody i was working with today. there were body parts on that sidewalk, i still remember a small child sitting upright, looked as though he had been unharmed but his mother or father at his feet had had their legs blown off and sat there in disbelief. there was nobody crying or screaming. they just all had the state of shock, like a shell-shocked look on their face. at last check we know that three people are dead, more than 100 people have been wounded and my sources are telling me at the boston police department that the number of those who have died will probably go up. as far as that third device you were talking about, our sources are telling us there was another device that was also at the finish line. it was planted in or under the grand stands. that is exactly where we were standing when the bomb went off across the street.
6:03 pm
they say that device did not go off. that device was smoking. it's the device they sprayed down with a water cannon about an hour afterwards and the device then went off. so clearly there is a lot of evidence still at the scene we're told. at the initial blast they have the area completely roped off. they did a good job knowing that was going to be a crime scene to preserve whatever evidence they could and where i'm standing this is the heart of the back bay area of boston. normally vibrant. this is going into a holiday work force and this should be packed with people. all of the streets are blocked off. the police have been going block by block looking into every trash can or everything they could possibly see that could be hiding some kind of device from the eye and they are going through every square inch of this city to find something. one other thing, scott. security for this race normally is extraordinarily tight and before the race is run there are bomb sniffing dogs that go the entire route into the city. you have e.o.d. teams that do
6:04 pm
the same thing. but after the race starts people are allowed to carry backpacks with them and that's -- you've got a lot of colleges in this area that feed in, a lot of people coming in to cheer people on, bringing food and refreshments for runners. that's when what they believe happened is that somebody carried the backpack in after the race had started, planted those bombs or devices in a trash can along the route where the spectators were sitting and just a few feet from where the runners were going by. there were thousands more spectators sitting along the sidewalk cheering them on. it didn't happen that way and if there was ever a silver lining-- and in this case there isn't really one-- that would be the only thing that you could point to to say this could have been so much worse. scott? >> pelley: jonathan, thank you. the wounded are now being treated in hospitals across boston and kate merrill is at brigham and women's hospital. kate? >> reporter: scott, 28 of the injured are being treated here at brigham and women's hospital.
6:05 pm
they're seeing all range of blast injuries from severe head and limb and leg injuries to broken bones and burns. the youngest victim three years old, the oldest 62. it's a very frustrating night for people here because the hospital was put into lockdown today meaning nobody who is not a patient or worker here can get into the hospital. they have very tight security here. the a.t.f., the f.b.i., swat team all surrounding this hospital tonight so we're seeing people crying, trying to get to family members. some of the injured, minor injuries are coming out an emotional scene, frightening scene for a lot of people getting back with their families. i want to bring you back out here live to the streets of boston in front of brigham and women's and show you the scene outside of brigham and womens. you can see the swat team vehicle is parked out front. that's the main waiting area and if i can swing you over here you can see what's greeting people at the front door: armed men
6:06 pm
with machine guns not letting anyone in or out tonight. a very serious situation still here at the hospital. the head of the emergency department told me tonight they've trained their whole careers for something like this. they never thought they'd see it. they've never seen anything like this here. in boston, scott back to you. >> pelley: kate thank you very much. we have just been told that one of the three persons who has been killed is an eight-year-old boy. this is from our station wbz. we understand an eight-year-old boy has died from his wounds suffered in the bombing. a short time ago, massachusetts governor patrick met with reporters and here's what he had to say. >> over 100 people were injured, some gravely. we are not ready yet to confirm the details of those injuries. there are federal, state and local law enforcement all on scene and coordinating very
6:07 pm
closely the f.b.i. has taken charge of the investigation as i mentioned. special agent in charge rick deslauriers will speak to that in just a minute. this is an active investigation, particularly in the several blocks around boylston street around that blast area. that's a crime scene. the national guard has secured that crime scene and is limiting access to it. >> pelley: as you just heard the governor mentioned that the f.b.i. is taking the lead in the investigation. nick deslauriers is the agent in charge. >> it is a criminal investigation that is -- has the potential -- is a potential terrorist investigation. we will be working diligently to gather information and gather all the facts and bring those who are responsible for this crime to justice as swiftly as possible. it is an ongoing investigation, as governor patrick mentioned. i'm not at liberty right now to
6:08 pm
go into details of that ongoing investigation but echoing governor patrick's words i encourage everyone to have a heightened state of vigilance here in the boston area tonight and tomorrow as we move forward. >> pelley: these are early hours get the investigation. we don't know who's responsible for this act of terrorism whether it was inspired overseas or domestically but our homeland security correspondent bob orr has been talking with his sources all afternoon and evening and has an update for us now, bob? >> reporter: scott, it's important that the f.b.i. out front has taken over control of the investigation. that's important both in substance and in symbolism. first in substance this is a worldwide investigation as they comb through different channels of intelligence streams trying to find out whether there was anything in the terrorist reporting pipeline that might have indicated a problem targeting boston specifically. it's also important because of the lab resources, the experts that can be brought to bear and on the symbolic side while this
6:09 pm
was an attack centered in boston it's really an attack against america. whether it's a foreign inspired international terror type attack or a domestic group or a lone wolf inspired by one or the other. this by definition is a terrorist attack. it was done against a crowd of innocent people at a highly publicized and high profile event. obviously done in a way to cause the greatest maxx mum damage, what's called lethality. maximum lethality so this is very likely to end up quote/unquote a terrorist case. the f.b.i. is being careful to say it's a criminal case right now and it could mortar that have direction but believe me just about everyone across the full spectrum of the government, scott, thinks this is a serious terrorist investigation and probably one of the worst we've seen since fort hood and certainly since 9/11. >> pelley: bob, thank you very much. senior correspondent john miller's former assistant director of the f.b.i. he's been talking to his sources all afternoon and evening. john, what do you have now?
6:10 pm
>> well, they're scouring the traps as bob said looking for some piece of intelligence that could have been a warning or might give them inside to something that some group or individuals are doing. they're looking at the symbolic dates, april 15 it's tax day, there's a bunch of groups who have issues about that. it's also patriots' day in boston. it's just short of april 19 which is the anniversary of waco. they'll look at all that but they're also zeroing in on very specific things. a piece of video that shows a man carrying two backpacks before the blast. an individual who was thought to be suspicious who people chased down who is being questioned now. he's a saudi national so they're looking at his status, when did he get here and they say he's being cooperative and denying any involvement so there's a lot of activity going on. >> pelley: now, that stretch of boylston street about two blocks that's locked down as a crime scene. what sort of physical evidence would they be looking for? >> they're going to look for not just any but every fragment of
6:11 pm
those two devices because what they want to do is they literally want to reconstruct them and scott you would be amazed-- although probably not given the amount of time you've spent in iraq and afghanistan-- but you would be impressed by how through so many small fragments they can piece together sometimes 85 or 90% of the tiny pieces of something that completely blew itself to bits. that will give them an idea of what the bomb is, who the bomb maker is in some cases and what the signature of that device is. is it an original design? is it something they've seen in al qaeda magazines or somewhere on the internet? it will be important clues. >> pelley: and the fact that the f.b.i. has now taken the lead in this investigation at this early hours tells you what? >> i reported that even before the f.b.i. reported it because that is basically a no brainer which is you've got two explosions going on in a crowded public televised event. that signals terrorism until someone tells us differently. that will be the mode the f.b.i.
6:12 pm
operates on you. heard rick deslauriers the special agent in charge saying there's a criminal investigation that could turn into an international terrorism investigation but they're going to go in with the premise that this was something with connections to terrorism and they're going to keep at that until they determine what it is but they're certainly going to throw every available resource at this and that will be an awful lot. >> pelley: john, thanks very much. we have on the telephone an eyewitness to the explosion. her name is jamie fowler. jamie, can you hear me? >> yes, i can, scott, good evening. >> pelley: good evening, what did you see? >> my husband had just finished the marathon and we dribbled back off the finish line to watch another good friend of ours come through. my husband went inside because he was really cold so we wish mid-friend well, came outside and were walking at the corner of boylston and her ford and we saw several drunk people and saw
6:13 pm
people start running and smelled smoke and it was really loud and chaotic and we thought there had been possibly gunfire. and we moved to an alleyway for protection and we couldn't get any information. we didn't know what was going on. so i actually called my dad who's in california and i said "do you see anything on the news?" and we lost the phone connection so we were standing in an alleyway trying to figure out what to do and just hearing sirens and smelling the smoke and it was pretty scary. >> pelley: did you witness the first explosion and then the second? >> we saw -- we didn't see the explosions but we heard a lot of noise and smelled the smoke and could see the -- we could see the smoke and see the ambulances. we were near the fire station at the corner of boylston and her ford so we could see all -- hear all the fire engines. hair ford. and literally moments before we
6:14 pm
had seen a little kid and his mom on the top of the fire -- all the fire crews were out watching the marathon and we'd seen everyone just having fun and enjoying the spirit of boston and the next thing we knew everybody was running and it was fairly chaotic and scary >> pelley: jamie fowler, one of the witnesses at the boston marathon today. jamie, thank you very much. we will be right back with more on the terrorist attack at the boston marathon.
6:15 pm
6:16 pm
>> pelley: before the boston marathon began today there was a moment of silence that lasted for 26 seconds to honor each of the victims of the sandy hook massacre. then hours later came the bombs at the finish line. terrell brown is in boston for us tonight. terrell, what do you see?
6:17 pm
>> reporter: scott, we're just outside of the perimeter that police have set up and still even as night has fallen here it's very much an active scene. we have seen state police, boston police, swat teams moving about here. even national guard troops brought in by the school bus load to work on securing this crime scene. of course over the next couple of days. what was interesting is that we're on the outside of that perimeter and there's a line of trash cans about four or five of them that local businesses here, they've been closed since that initial explosion, there's been a security guard that was instructed by police to look in each one of those trash cans. so we watched him pace back and forth throughout the course of many hours and then while we were on the air tonight, scott, we actually saw police move in and take those trash cans off the street. it appeared to be out of an abundance of caution. we also know that investigators and bomb protection uniforms are walking the street, really combing any piece of evidence that they can find right now.
6:18 pm
it's going to be a very long investigation as many boxes and bags and belongings were left behind in the chaos of the explosion. each one of those items have to be searched and thoroughly looked through as evidence as this crime scene is continued to be looked at at this point. we talked to police earlier as well. you have may have seen folks milling about here. police say that will stop tonight. it is a crime scene. they don't want anybody walking on this portion of boylston street, scott. >> pelley: boylston street right there in the heart of boston may be closed down for some time. terrell, thank you very much. other cities coast to coast have stepped up security in light of what happened in boston and we'll have that story next.,,,,,
6:19 pm
6:20 pm
plans were activated in many major cities in new york. hundreds of counterterrorism officers hit the streets and patrols are up in los angeles as well where we find bill whitaker
6:21 pm
tonight. bill, what's the situation there? >> scott, police and sheriff's departments are providing extra security to high profile locations like public transit, government buildings, shopping centers, any place where crowds of people might gather. there will be an increased police presence at sporting events, including tonight's dodgers game in los angeles which is a high profile tribute game to jackie rob inson. the stadium will be staffed with additional police officers, bomb squad personnel and bomb sniffing dogs. commander andrew smith with the l.a.p.d. >> we're looking at critical sites as we always do in situations such as this. but we're also looking at the events where there are a large number of people. >> reporter: the sheriff's department has activated its emergency operations center, a high tech command post that consolidate it is city's emergency, police, and fire departments. officials would coordinate any response to mass casualty events. and security has been beefed up
6:22 pm
at airports along the west coast with more check points, bomb-sniffing dogs and security officers. san francisco police chief greg sur. >> this turns the block all the way back to 2001 again i think, at least until we find out exactly what happened in boston, right? so whatever the thinking was on september 12 is now the thinking today. >> reporter: scott, there is no evidence of a threat, but until authorities know the nature of those explosions in boston they're taking no chances. >> pelley: bill whitaker in the los angeles newsroom tonight. bill, thank you very much. we will have the latest information when we come back i,
6:23 pm
6:24 pm
>> pelley: here's what we know abouat this hour about the terrt attack along the boston marathon route. the f.b.i. has taken the lead in the investigation. we are told this evening that three people are confirmed dead, one of them an eight-year-old boy. more than 120 others were
6:25 pm
wounded, some of them are in critical condition tonight. two bombs went off near the finish line of the marathon today which is also patriots' day commemorating the beginning of the revolutionary war. the blast came 15 seconds apart, just a few blocks from each other. there are reports that one other bomb was discovered nearby, conflicting reports about whether it was disarmed or whether police were able to disable it before it went off. this happened about two hours after the winners crossed the finish line after the crowds had thinned. we do not know yet whether this is a case of foreign or domestic terrorism but cbs' bob orr has been speaking with authorities all day today and he has told us that at least one person is being questioned by police. president obama insists that whoever is behind this will "feel the full weight of justice." much of the heart of boston is shut down tonight and bob orr
6:26 pm
has the latest developments in the investigation. bob? >> reporter: scott, just got off the phone with a federal official who gives us an important clarification. early on they reported and we reported that police had recovered one unexploded device in addition to the remnants of the two bombs that did go off. that was an encouraging lead because an unexploded device can tell us an awful lot about the craftsmanship and what might have gone into making the bombs. i'm now told that that what they might might have been an unexploded device, that did not pan out. they don't have that in their custody so we are left with just the knowledge that two bombs did go off. they're picking up part parts fm those bombs and still hope to do the forensic analysis but we do not have a full working, if you will, bomb to really tear apart and break down. meanwhile, there are no suspects in custody. police are talking to a number of people but no one is said to be a person of interest, scott. >> pelley: bob, thank you. there is word that a third bomb might have exploded while it was being hit by a water cannon by
6:27 pm
the authorities but we will have more details on all of this as the investigation proceeds. that's our expanded edition of the "cbs evening news." cbs "this morning" will have the very latest first thing tomorrow. for all of us at cbs news all around the world, good night. ,,,
